The main character, the successful Megan McKenzie, lives in London and owns a restaurant given to her by her mother. The unexpected death of her grandfather, the head of the Scottish McKenzie clan, turns her life upside-down.
Meghan travels to the North of Scotland where she inherited the castle and whiskey distillery left to her by her grandfather to finalize the details. Upon her arrival an attempt is made on her life and she is rescued by a huge black raven which then proceeds to frighteningly follows her.
Megan meets her cousins and her great-uncle who then immerse her in the traditions, secrets and legends of the North of Scotland. Megan learns that the unique area holds many secrets and mysteries. Although she is afraid of ghosts and darkness life soon forces her to face every fear imaginable.
Megan meets Derek Drummond, a mysterious and handsome highlander. They fall in love but their happiness is marred by the terrible secret he hides, revealed in the middle of the story. Derek is the missing Lord Drummond who disappeared a century ago and was cursed by a spell which makes it impossible for him to be human from dawn to dusk when he can only exist as a raven.
This revelation almost drives Megan mad but in the end love wins and together they agrees to search for a solution. A seer tells them to go to the Megalithic Ring of Brodgar, where they must perform a ritual that will reveal how to remove the spell. The ritual can only be performed once every 4 years on the night of November 11-12.
Megan and Derek await the proper time. Megan travels to Edinburgh to meet mother who visits her from America. Her mother, Arlaine, reveals to her the secret of her past. During the trip Megan has a dream in which an ancestor, Margaret McKenzie, Derek's ex-fiancée, promises to reveal the secret to breaking the spell if she can find her.
Megan returns to Scotland where a new attempt is being conspired against Megan, and she and Derek go to the family crypt. This time Derek is shot and wounded and disappears. Megan goes to find him in the nearby of her great-uncle and cousin who are not aware Lord Drummond is alive and lives there. Megan searches for Derek's hiding place in a high tower, experiencing the terror of searching for a loved one.
When she finds Derek on the brink of death with an infected wound she barely saves him. They travel to the Ring of Brodgar where Megan sprinkles blood and lies on the altar. Otherworldly forces plunge her into Derek's past and she awakens full of pain and shock.
